A quickie on what happened:
On June 11, Sam was up at Silver Lake with Randy, Luke and 2 of Luke's friends - Joel and Jackson. Sam was on a quad and found a dune with a 8-10 ft dropoff on the other side. He and the quad went head over wheels and Sam landed in a pretty bad position. No one saw the accident but Joel was at his side pretty quickly. Joel flagged down someone who called DNR who then called for help. At that point, Sam was having a hard time breathing and couldn't feel his legs. He ended up being taken by AeroMed to Spectrum at about 4pm (NOT a fun 1st helicopter ride - it was pretty rough up there). By 10pm Sam was in surgery. His back was broken at T-9, which is about 1 inch above the belly button. Dr. Brown did a great job in surgery and Sam now has 2 12" titanium rods in his back along with some connectors and screws. We're told it will be 3-6 months before the swelling in his spinal cord goes down and 1-2 yrs before you really know how much feeling may come back.
Sam and all of us believe that since God created his spine, He can surely fix it. We are praying for a miracle - to get complete healing. Please pray with us.
We also know that if it's God's plan for Sam to live his life in a wheelchair, then that will be a good life too.
This is so out of the control of doctors. It's a God thing all the way.

  • Well, Sam, look on the bright side: if you have to have rods in your back, it's pretty cool that they're titanium rods. Why? Titanium is a really cool metal: it's extremely strong, very lightweight, and it doesn't set off metal detectors (no problems getting through airport security when you go on trips). Titanium is also used in some very cool things, like really fast racing bikes, the airframe of the SR-71 Blackbird stealh bomber (the world's fastest aircraft), Apple PowerBook laptop computers, etc. Now you can say you've got the same stuff in you as a $300 million stealth bomber :-)

  • Hey Sam,
Everyone is praying for you. I guess you've been hearing that alot lately, huh? Most of us are worried about you too, and Angelle swears that there is going to be a miracle, and I'm not doubting it either. Just remember, that God said everything happens for his purpose. What purpose comes out of falling off an ATV, I don't know. I'm praying that this experiance might draw you closer to him and his will for you. Read Colossians 1:9-12, it might help.
I stop and pray every time I think about you, so you have got to get better. Hold on, ok?

    Your sister in Christ,
    Megan

  • Hey Sam this is Paul. We just got back from North Manitou. That was really cool. The day before we left, we went to Mary Free Bed, but you weren't there, so we'll visit you early next week. David is in Wisconson for a couple weeks with his grandparents, and I think that Ian was getting back from his cottage today, (Saturday, June 26) so if it works out Ian can come too. We're praying for you, and it's pretty cool that you still want to do ATVing after this.

  • Dear Sam,
I've been out of the country and just checking the website for information. I'm so sorry to her about your accident but reading all the updates are inspiring. You are one amazing young man. You are making speedy progress and I'm not a bit surprised to see you smiling on your picture. That's how you were in elementary grades! It sounds like you are doing well in the candy department. I hope you have received some CD's too. I remember how much you enjoyed listening to Petra, but don't forget a little Beethoven(not the dog!), Mozart and Gershwin! Keep singing too! It's good for your lungs! Can you figure out who this message is from now? That right! Mrs. Vanden Bosch! It is evident from all the hearfelt notes that you are experiencing God's faithfulness through this time.
Please know that I, along with many others ,will be praying mightily for you and your family.
